Abstract art is opposed to figurative and narrative oil painting. Its sub-genres are geometric abstraction, characterized by geometric forms associated with color surfaces and lyrical abstraction, defined as the direct expression of personal emotions. Abstract art as an artistic movement appeared in the 20th century. Some of its greatest figures are Vassily Kandinsky, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko or Robert Motherwell.
